What Do Management Colleges Expect from the Applicants

PGDM admissions are in full swing for the year 2017. Every management aspirant wants to get admission in the top college. However, colleges have to reject a large number of admission applications and only a few of them are accepted. Many students fail to understand that management education does not test your memory; it tests your ability to learn new things and present yourself. Let’s look at some of the factors that the top colleges take into consideration while selecting the students.

Academic ability

Colleges don’t expect students to excel in academics. However, a consistent academic performance is important. Most of the colleges have the criteria of 50%-60% in 10th, 12th and all the semesters of graduation. Entrance exam score is another important aspect taken into consideration.

Aptitude and reasoning

Some colleges have their own entrance tests for PGDM admissions, while others consider scores of CAT or GMAT. Aptitude and logic are an integral part of the entrance exams. Management education is not related to mathematics, but aptitude and reasoning help to determine the analytical skills of a candidate.

Communication skills

Management students are expected to possess excellent communication skills. Communication and interpersonal skills play a major role during college admissions as well as placements as it is the need of the hour to survive in the industry. Communication skills involve written communication too.

Domain knowledge

Some amount of domain knowledge is expected. PGDM students learn about their respective specializations during the 2-year course. However, they need to be familiar with the basics of management and leadership.

Leadership and persuasive skills

Leadership and convincing skills play a major role. Leadership skills are evident through extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, academic achievements and community commitments. A few traits of a candidate are revealed during the group discussion and personal interview rounds.

Strong Values

The applicant should have a desire to have business ethical values and willingness to contribute to society. Institutions looks for students who exhibit the highest ethical standards and respect for others, and can make positive contributions to the institution and society.

Team player

The candidate must have desire to lead as well as be able to collaborate within a team. Management students need to work in unison for various activities in college and throughout their professional lives.

Positive attitude

Colleges select the students on the basis of the positive attitude that they bring to the table. Self motivated and determined candidates are preferred.

Colleges look for innovators to be a part of our PGDM program because entrepreneurship is closely related innovation. An innovative mindset makes a lot of difference.

There is no rule book, which gives you some definite do’s and don’ts for PGDM students. You need to hone your skills and be prepared for the unexpected. It is essential to set a goal for yourself and work hard to achieve it.
